A Special Tree
In our fast paced world, we are told “sometimes it is easy to miss the forest for the trees(the kratom tree)…” With respect to the forest, some trees need more attention.
Kratom, or Mitragyna Speciosa, is a remarkable tree which has been used by individuals all around the world. With evidence suggesting that Kratom has been grown since the dawn of man, it has a documented history which first gained momentum in the 1800’s. Fast-forward two centuries later, and the Kratom tree has touched countless lives.
Were you to delve into the jungles of the Western Pacific, you just may stumble across a Kratom tree. It would be difficult to distinguish from other trees; it has wide, verdant leaves, which can grow to be about the size of your hand, but otherwise looks nondescript. Many factors will influence its height, ranging from 15 to 100 feet. Native to South East Asia, Kratom is most commonly found in areas with heavy rainfall. Today, it is found both naturally and in farms dedicated to its cultivation.
Background and Genetics
Interestingly, the Kratom tree has a number of different phenotypes, or natural, genetic alterations, that produce a range of compounds found in the leaf. Like other plants – grapes, citrus fruit, apples – the kratom tree produces a number of different ‘strains’. These strains vary in their effects – with attributes that promote wakefulness and energy in some, and others that may aid in sleep and relaxation. These are natural variations that have since been improved by farmers by means of a natural breeding process. The Kratom Company has generalized graphics to show reviewed effects. (White, Green, Red).
The active compounds contained within the kratom leaf are what make it unique. Kratom is consumed in various ways; the leaves are ground down and put into a tea, extracted into a liquid, or taken in powder form. Powder form seems the most prevalent for its simplicity. The leaf should be finely ground so that the powder resembles something with the granular size of, say, store-bought cinnamon. Some strains are light green (often ‘Green’ or ‘White’ Vein), while some are a darker color (Typically ‘Red Vein’). Kratom products are named according to their strain and the location at which they’re grown, like ‘Red-Vein Borneo’ or ‘White-Vein Malay’.
Is Kratom right for you?
Countless individuals have found kratom can aid in some aspect of their daily schedule. It has been compared to coffee, as some users report being given an edge in a sleepy morning. But other users have found it to help them relax at the end of a long day. These effects are all natural by-products of the remarkable tree. The wide array of naturally occurring ‘strains’ allows users to find which one is ‘just right’ for their needs.
That depends. Kratom can be used for both the mind and the body, but should not be relied on in place of traditional healthcare. Instead, kratom can be an excellent supplement to healthy living, and it can be used as a natural option to promote a sense of well-being and enhance mood. Kratom has been used for years by many in ways small and large. Like with food and anything else put into the body, it should be used mindfully. Consider the options, the reliability of the vendor, and the desired effects. Like so many others, you may find kratom to be a warm companion to the everyday.
